Do you want to die a grumpy old man or a sage? Asked differently, “How do you want to live the last quarter of life?”
You’ve heard the expression “Begin with the end in mind.” (Covey) To become a sage, you must do emotional-spiritual work in the middle years of life.
Here are definitions of two older men.
GRUMPY OLD MAN
- At the end of his life, he is internally divided and carrying unresolved secrets.
- He might be abrupt, angry, and/or restless.
- He is a loner who lives detached.
- No one really knows him.
- He is driven all his life by shame and fear.
- He has lots of excuses for bad behaviors.
SAGE
He operates out of peace and rest in his soul. Being with a sage is peaceful. He enjoys your company and you enjoy his. Hard topics are discussed but there is no judgement or condemnation. After visiting with a sage you always feel called to growth and reaching higher.
Prayer
Jesus, you were a sage and so much more. You are the role model for living. Please give me wisdom and insight. Help me find your deep abiding rest and your peace that surpasses understanding. Make me like you. Amen.
Bible Connection
Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” See Matthew 11:28
