After the blog titled Describing the Problem was released, a brother and I were discussing it. He made this statement. “Regret just tears me up.” That statement influenced the creation of this blog.
Sometimes my mind loves to wallow in regret. It reminds me of failure as I try to fall asleep. It whispers, “Loser” in the dark of the night. It taps into painful decisions made in my youth. At times, in the quietest moments, my brain turns against me.
What can one do? What do you say to your own brain when it chooses to torment you with regret? The answer is start responding with spiritual truths. Jesus said we were forgiven. So, when regret rises in you, respond with spiritual truths. And don’t stop repeating truth until your mind submits.
He are some spiritual thoughts for consideration:
- In the Psalms we are told, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has God removed our transgression from us.”
- On the cross Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
- Peter said, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (Jesus’ sacrifice and love covers my sins.)
- Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full.” (Full means full. No room for regret.)
- Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man with leprosy. He said, “I am willing. Be clean.” (I am also 100% clean in Jesus.)
- Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” (I claim Jesus’ rest in my mind.)
- Jesus told the woman at the well, “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst again. The water I give will well up to eternal life.” (Mind, you may only think living water, eternal life thoughts.)
Prayer
Father, at times, my own mind turns, betrays, and attacks me. I make you Lord of my mind. I accept your truths and forgiveness. I accept in my heart, mind, and soul that you are good and I am forgiven. Help me when my mind goes rogue. Help me speak truth in those difficult moments. I want the rest Jesus promised. I want rest in my mind and soul. Amen.
