How do you respond when your wife is venting emotional pain? Do you stay present? Can you remain calm? Are you able to look past the intensity and see the hurt underneath? Or… do you shift into panic and survival?
When emotions rise, many of us default to one of these patterns:
1. Attack Back
(You think: “This is a fight. I must attack back.”)
You escalate. You get shorter, louder, harsher. You push back, dismiss, and disregard. Her pain no longer matters—only winning does.
2. Go Numb
You shut down. Your eyes drift away. Your mind disconnects. You stop feeling—your own fear and her disappointment. You lock up emotionally.
3. Run Away
You exit. You turn your back, leave the room, or mentally check out. Anything to create distance from the moment.
4. Turn Inward (Self-Attack)
You panic and turn on yourself.
“I’m so stupid. I’m such a failure. I’m not good enough.”

That moment is really about how your wife’s emotional pain triggers your deepest fear. And how you respond when that fear floods you.
Each of the above is a fear-based survival response. Growth begins when you recognize it—and choose a different way.
Prayer
Father, when my fear is triggered, help me stay grounded. Help me Hold. Stay. Breathe. Wait. Let it pass. Teach me emotionally healthy, Jesus responses. Amen
Scripture
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 NIV
