What is the inner dialogue of a man with an addiction? What taunts him? What are his inner tormenting messages? There is one constant that is often observed: It’s his inability to find rest.
Here is an example of his raging thoughts.
- I am alone.
- And, I am not okay being alone or quiet.
- I need to run away from this emotionally disturbing place.
- I need to escape.
- I cannot be alone with myself.
- My entire body is under attack.
- I need to escape.
- I must find comfort or pleasure.
- I need something to distract “me from me.”
- My relationships are weak.
- There is conflict in my marriage.
- We have struggles.
- I am feeling stressed, and tense, and overwhelmed with restlessness.
- I do not know what to do when I feel bad.
- Old voices keep calling me back, to old comforts and pleasures.
- I can’t stand being alone, bored, or restless.
- I must escape.
Bible Connection
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 (LSB)
Prayer
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I need help. I am not okay with myself. I do not understand the fear inside me. Will you help and lead me. I want to find your rest. And, I want to rest in your presence. Amen.
