Are you a reader? Because, I love it when someone says, “Hey, I am reading this really good book, you should check it out.” My heart races when I hear these words. I run to my computer and look up the book on Amazon. I especially love challenging and emotional books. So much so, that my wife joked about it. Yesterday, she went to the door, turned around, and yelled, “Your book-a-day just arrived!”
I have not always been a reader. The first half of my life I was a TV junkie. After work I would plop down on the couch, grab the remote, and get lost in TV land. Not only TV, but I also love movies. In fact, I can watch a movie from the beginning, the middle or even close to the end. And, I frequently watch my favorite movies over and over.
My wife loved books. She talked books. My wife often got lost in her reading. She would read a book a night. She saw books as friends. Her reading habit was equivalent to my television habit. Some evenings it caused a conflict only one of us would win. I am so glad it was her.
Back then, I just knew I was so right and reading was so dumb. Now, I realize I was dumb and reading has the ability to open up a whole new dimension of life. There is a great saying, “Leaders are Readers.” Let me add, men who read, especially about emotional growth, make great leaders.
“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”
Harry S. Truman
