There are three emotional identity beliefs available. Here they are:
- I must be a super person.
- I am a defective person.
- I’m just a regular-average-normal person.
The Super Man
He works extra hard. He must excel. He gets value from standing out. He enjoys the praise, but never arrives.
It’s push, push, push. These men live in the world of more, bigger, and better. The pace is hard to sustain. Often times, some addiction develops to help him sustain being super.
The Defective Man
Growing up, this man frequently heard “What’s wrong with you?” (or something like that).
So he concluded he was defective and not enough. He turned that thought into a driving belief. Now he lives and talks like a defective adult. He believes others are better than him. With that belief, he carries a heavy sadness in his soul.
The Regular-Average-Normal Man
Of the three positions this is the most restful. It sits somewhere between the exhaustion of always trying to be a super, and the heavy sadness of being defective.
Regulars know they are one, unique, part of God’s creation. These men admit to having strengths and weaknesses. But readily admit creator God is the only true good that exists.
Prayer
Father, thank you for making me regular and unique at the same time. Thank you for gifting me with talents, abilities, and special skills. But I could never save myself. So thank you for Jesus. I love being your regular, forgiven, redeemed, chosen son. Amen.
Bible Connection
For here is the way God loves the (supers, defects and regulars) he gave his only, unique Son as a gift. So now everyone who believes in him will never perish but experience everlasting life.
