I was listening to a speaker—can’t remember who or even the topic—but one line stuck with me: “Can you just sit there and be with yourself?”
That’s a great question. Because it immediately leads to deeper ones:
- Do you like yourself?
- Are you good company to yourself?
Those questions invite you inward. Then my thinking shifted—from emotional to spiritual.
The other day I was sitting alone in a restaurant. Four chairs at the table… and I was in one of them. The place was full—couples, groups, and conversations all around. When I was younger, that would have made me so anxious.
- What are they thinking?
- Do they think I have no friends?
- Do I look like some kind of lonely loser?
But I don’t ask those questions anymore. Those are fearful, immature, boy questions. Now, when I sit alone, I do something different.
- I invite Abba to sit in the chair to my right.
- Jesus sits across from me.
- The Holy Spirit takes the chair to my left.
Then I order a coffee, open my journal, and enjoy their company… and my own.
The questions for you:
- How well do you sit alone with yourself?
- Are you comfortable in your own presence?
- Can you find Abba and enjoy the quiet?
Close
As Christians, we never dine alone. We either sit feeling judged and dismissed… or we sit with Abba, mercy, and blessings.
Prayer
Father, may I find and enjoy you everywhere. Thank you for always being with me. Thank you for never leaving me. Amen.
Scripture
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” -Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)
