A funeral was recently held. It was for a high school friend. It made me happy and sad. At a funeral you feel many emotions. Sad because my friend was so youthful. Happy because I get to enjoy another day of life.
The church was packed. This man was truly loved. During the Pastor’s talk he paused. Wiped a tear and continued, “I never cry at funerals. But this man was a wonderful friend to me.”
After leaving the service I felt somber. It seemed like a good day to appreciate life. Part of the day was spent on a walk thanking God for the beauty of his creation. It was a good day to text both my daughters saying, “I love you.”
Later, my buddy wanted to lean in and listen harder to a story my friend was telling. The words seemed more important. Words are how you express a piece of yourself. And stories come from deep places in the soul. It seemed life was calling me to be more present and grateful.
Driving later, a mistake was make on my drive-through order. Acting upset and irritated seemed dumb. I seldom eat French fries, but a basket full of fries offered great comfort. Today, I was reminded being alive and in a relationship is a good thing. So, I hugged my wife a little tighter.
Closing Thoughts
People and life should be enjoyed. Love and loss are ways of knowing you are connected. And a life well lived should be celebrated.
Prayer
Father, we are told to give thanks in all things. Today I thank you for life and death. Amen.
