The Foundation of Strong Attaching
These three words come from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and answer a single, essential question:
“When I am in distress, will you be there for me?”
The three terms are:
Accessible. Responsive. Engaged.
Accessible-
“When I reach for you, will you be emotionally available?”
(Not avoiding, detaching, shutting down, withdrawing, or becoming defensive.)
Your emotional availability comforts me.
Responsive-
“When I reach for you, will you respond?”
Your lovingly response communicates to your spouse:
“You matter to me.”
Engaged-
“Are you emotionally involved with me?”
Your emotional engagement tells your spouse,
“You are very important to me.”
Closing
To build a strong relationship and a secure attachment, we must grow in being Accessible, Responsive, and Engaged—especially in moments of distress.
Prayer
Father, thank You for always being available—hearing me and blessing me. I need Your wisdom, support, and encouragement. Thank You for Jesus and the Holy Comforter.
Amen.
Scripture
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
Ephesians 4:2–3
