I am asked, “My wife says she wants me to join her in deep dialogues. What? That’s not me. And, I’m not her. What does that even mean, deep dialogues?”
Let’s establish the difference between Daily Dialogue and Deep Dialogue.
Daily Dialogues
Daily dialogues include light topics:
- Today’s weather.
- The price of gasoline.
- What’s for lunch?
- Let’s watch TV.
- What are we doing this weekend?
- The traffic is going to be bad today.
- And a lot of other small talk topics.
Deeper Dialogues require:
- Personal insights
- Self awareness
- Emotional language
- And, a lot of patience
Deep Dialogues
Deeper Dialogue includes comments like these:
- I want you to know me! And, I’m still learning me.
- Deeper dialogue will take patience, supportive words, and kindness.
- An emotional struggle I am having is…
- Do you know what I’m grieving?
- Will you protect me–even if you learn my weak areas?
- I may change slowly. Will you be patient with me?
- You know what I’m learning about myself?
- I just gained an insight from this book I’m reading.
- Here’s a thought that touched me deeply.
- Will you be patient if I have the same struggle for a long time?
- This is how God is growing me…
- And many other similar emotional, personal, life-struggle comments.
Prayer
Father, I do not understand the world of deeper dialogue. I was not trained in it. I have not needed to participate in it. And, I do not understand it. But, my wife is asking me to go there. So, I’m asking you to help me.
Father, I need to learn how to engage in deeper dialogue. You are the keeper of knowledge and wisdom. I am asking you to lead me on this growth mission of learning deeper dialogue. Thank you and Amen.
Bible Meditation
(Deeper dialogue is part of God‘s plan for oneness which includes emotionally, spiritually and physically.)
“And the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.” – Mark 10:8 (NIV)

Agree, the one other item is it takes a lot of listening.
Agreed.
That is one skill that needs constant work.
My wife and I have mostly daily dialogues. But we feel more connected when we talk about deeper things.
You guys sound great.
Deep dialogue means deep bonding.
Keep growing!
