Emotional growth and change is sometimes difficult. We love staying the same. It’s so much easier. Even when we try to change our own thinking, it works against us. Consider these thoughts:
- I already know what I need to do. I just have to find the will to do it.
- No one can help me. I have to do this alone.
- Don’t make it out to be such a big deal. No one else really cares.
- I can live with a little pain and discomfort. Why can’t you?
- I know as much as the next guy. Other men can’t help me.
- People don’t care. They just want your money.
- I don’t know. And I don’t care that I don’t know.
- Your own life is a mess. Why should I listen to you?
- You think it’s a problem. I don’t think it’s a problem.
- You’re making something out of nothing. It’s not that big a deal.
- What if I don’t really want to change? No one can make me. I like the way I am.
- I was made this way. And I’ll die this way.
- This is who I am. You should accept and love me.
- God loves me just the way I am. Why can’t you?
Why this Matters
One excuse is just as good as another if deep down you don’t want to change. Some change is hard. Most of the time it will take everything you’ve got and Heavens too to be transformed.
Prayer
Father, I know you want me to be like Jesus. I’m trying. It may take the rest of my life and even then I’ll still fall short. Thank you for grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Oh, and Holy Spirit thank you for your presence and encouragement. Amen.
