I met a group of folks in Europe. One man in the group said he had extra time and ability and wanted to be part of being useful. I suggested he join a group that provides support services. He said, “There are no service groups here in Europe.”
Another young man chimed in and said he was part of a service group in California once. It was a group of volunteers who worked with Hospice patients. He said the work was very rewarding.
A third guy asked, “How is it that you have so many service groups in America?” I thought for a moment and responded. “It’s the Church. A function of the Church is to serve. Churches organize service groups and try to impact their communities.”
Someone else responded, “It’s sad, that they make you do that work!” Inwardly, I chuckled. Outwardly, I responded. “No one is required to serve. One of the teachings of the Church is the value of service.”
The first man responded, “If you tried to start a service group here, people would frown upon it and be suspicious of your agenda.”
I thanked God for this conversation. He allowed me to see the thinking of a country where there is little belief in God or interest in his Church. I am so happy for my faith. I am happy that Christians band together and form groups that deliver all kinds of service.
My Father and mother were involved in church and service. My wife and I are involved in service. My children are involved in church and service. What a wonderful Christian tradition. As followers of Christ we get to form communities and serve one another.
Prayer
Father, thank you for the teachings of Jesus. Thank you for his Church. And, thank you for setting up the Church as a place of service. Jesus has a heart of service. Thank you that I have been served. And, thank you that I can now serve. Thank you that church continues to teach service, teamwork, and oneness. May we the Church glorify you through our service. Amen.
Bible Meditation
The widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. So the leadership said, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the spirit and of wisdom and put them in charge of this task. Read Acts 6:1-3
