Some individuals grew up with such healthy parents, they learned great emotional skills. They were also taught excellent connecting skills. But there is a second group of individuals. These, now grown adults, only learned half of life’s needed emotional skills.
They learned to be strong in these ways:
- How to be in control
- How to fix problems
- How to see what’s wrong
- How to tell others what to do, and
- How to ignore self and over-focus on others.
The above beliefs and behaviors help an individual survive daily life.
The Holy Spirit, your spouse, and others can help you see your overuse of the above beliefs. Growth and change are possible and you can develop needed additional skills.
Here is the second set of skills that should be added:
- How to follow and let others lead
- How to rest even though all problems aren’t fixed
- How to live from a heart overflowing with gratitude and what’s right
- How to listen and learn from others, finally
- Being peaceful and finding joy in just being who God made you.
Why this matters
Most of us learned a first set of emotional, survival skills. That includes half the tools you need. It’s the second set of skills that helps you thrive and function successfully.
Are you letting God transform you and develop you into his image?
Prayer
Father, thank you for being in the transformation business. I need your help. Sometimes I can’t see my blind spots. And sometimes I don’t want to see my weaknesses. But, I want a rich life with you. Help me not hinder myself from having a great walk with you today. Amen.
