Equipping Christian Men for Richer Relationships

Prioritize Building Attachments

SKILL BUILDING SERIES

Attachment is one of our most basic needs. It is where we feel safe and experience physical, spiritual, and emotional closeness. Attachment is a deep, deep bond.

As babies we craved attachment. To survive we needed to attach to our mothers. Attaching to mom and dad was the beginning of surviving and relationship development.

Attaching is a theme that runs through our entire life. We are constantly thinking about attaching and feeling loved. Lots of movies, books, and stories carry the theme of being known and loved. Said slightly differently, we hunger for a deep, rich bond.

We love attachment. We need attachment. We thrive when we are well attached. But trauma often causes an attachment fear. The wounded individual thinks, “I am damaged. I hurt. I struggle and am confused. No one will want a person like me.”

It’s hard to find rich attachment, so a person may turn to an addiction. The addiction is where they attach. The addiction becomes their partner. That is how desperately we long for attachment.

Spiritually, we are made for attachment to our maker. He is referred to as our Heavenly Father. We are designed so our whole being longs for attachment. We long to attach with our mind, body, soul, and spirit.

SKILL 10

I was made for attachment. Because of that fact, I will move aside any issue that hinders me from attaching to God, my spouse, and others.

PRAYER

Father, keep teaching me about attachment. I long to be deeply known, loved, and accepted. I long for great bonding and attachment. Thank you that prayer attaches me to you. Help me stay in constant contact with you. Strengthen and grow me into a great attach-er, just like you. Amen.

Bible

Jesus said these two things about attachment.
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5 (ESV)

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. – Mark 12:30 (ESV)
