Is there a plan for listening to my wife? What am I supposed to be hearing when she talks?
Here are some ideas.
- Stay present. Be curious.
- The story is out front. She is the story. The story is not what you make up in your head.
- She is painting a picture with words. Listen for comments that repeat and emotionally charged words.
- She is in a battle called life. Which of these is she sharing?
- Did she have a victory today? Celebrate with her.
- Did she get wounded today? Grieve with her.
- Did she discover a new puzzle piece in her understanding of life. Be surprised with her.
- When she’s getting close to the end of her story offer comfort.
- And end by quietly tell yourself, I’m so glad she wants to talk to me.
Why these ideas?
Bonding and intimacy occur when we make a deep, emotional connection.
Prayer
Father, please give me wisdom. Help me learn the skill of oneness. Amen.
