Here are three comments taken from the book titled, Trauma Induced Sexual Addiction. (TINSA®)
In the book, it states, “Early wounding events, such as a lack of attunement and emotional neglect, can predispose a person to addiction.”
“Addicts that were treated in Colorado centers suffered from the lack of attunement or were invalidated for their authentic worth.”
“These adverse experiences most often occurred in the form of attachment wounds, such as lack of protection, and a lack of attunement.”
What is lack of attunement? It’s mentioned multiple times in the first five pages of the book. Attunement is the act of being aware of and responsive to another person’s emotions, needs, and moods.
I hope the light bulb is going off. Addicts lack the ability to respond to another person’s emotions, needs, and moods.
How does a son learn to attune? He watches mom and dad attune to each other. Then mom attunes to her son. Later dad attunes to him. That’s how a son is trained to attune–by observing.
Why This Matters
No attunement training in the growing up years means no attunement is happening later in marriage.
Prayer
Father, thank you that you know me, love me, and pursue me. Thank you for always being present and interested in me. Thank you that you attune to me. Amen.
Bible
You can see God’s heart in this verse about Jeremiah (1:5 Amplified)
Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you (and approved you as my chosen instrument). And before you were born, I consecrated you (to myself as my own); I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
