A man once spoke up in a group meeting. Exasperated, he announced “Everyone keeps telling me, Just do the work. Just do the work. But, what is the work? No one will explain to me the work.”
The man was new to the group. An older, seasoned member, thought for a moment. He wanted to have a simple, clear answer for a young motivated new member. Here is what he said:
- Stop lying.
- Quit hiding.
- No more pretending.
- Enough isolating.
- More connecting.
- Slow down.
- Start feeling.
- Being sad about your past is a good idea.
- Facing your fears is important.
- Being in a growth group is essential.
- And, joining us as we all share our stories is the work.
The young man sat quietly. He thought a moment. Then responded. “Thank you. I get it now. And, I have a lot of work to do.”
