Equipping Christian Men for Richer Relationships

I Can’t Change

What does it mean when a husband says “I can’t change”? This statement causes me curiosity. What is he really saying? Hasn’t he already made thousands of changes? I want to push back by saying things like:

  • You were in diapers once then you sat in a desk in first grade.
    • “But, you can’t change.”
  • You were a first grader then a graduating senior getting a diploma.
    • “But, you can’t change.”
  • You had no job. Then, you got a first, second and third job.
    • “But, you can’t change.”
  • You were single. And, then you said, “I do” and got married.
    • “But, you can’t change.”
  • You had no money. Then you got a paycheck and money,
  • You had no home. Then you bought a house.
  • You’ve been active and a part of several different churches.
  • Raised children.
  • You were 20, then turned 30. Then 40.
  • You’ve seen people you love get old, sick, and die.
  • And you still say, “I can’t change.”

So, what does “I can’t change” really mean? It means change in the requested area will be very difficult. So, “I don’t want to change!” And, I am not changing for you, me, our marriage, the family, or our God.

Bible Verse

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18:3 (NIV)

Prayer

Father, when I am defiant, rebellious or ignorant, please help me. I need wisdom and strength. Help me keep changing to look more like Jesus. Amen
