Equipping Christian Men for Richer Relationships

Handle Rejection Like Jesus

One major area of emotional work is handling REJECTION. In your life you will be rejected a least a 1,000 times (easy). Learning how to handle rejection is critical.

The pain of emotional rejection is real. And, learning how to successfully handle it is essential.

How does rejection sound? Here are some examples:

  • I don’t want to be your friend any more.
  • We don’t want you on our team.
  • We don’t like you.
  • You are stupid. Get away.
  • No one wants to be your friend.

When rejection happens, consider what Jesus said:

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you.” -John 15:18 (LSB)

  1. Pray for wisdom.
  2. Call it by its name. “I am being rejected!”
  3. Say out loud, “I hate rejection!”
  4. Do not run from the feeling of rejection. Give yourself time to process through the pain.
  5. Take three deep, long, cleansing breaths. Say, “I breathe in love. I breathe out rejection.”
  6. If you can, take a walk with the Heavenly Father. On the walk say, out loud, every painful thought on your mind. He’s listening. He gets you.
  7. Keep returning to the loving, presence of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Bible Verse

He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

-Isiah 53:3 (LSB)

Prayer

Father, I need to be loved and accepted. Thank you that you love, accept, and never reject me. Thank you that you are glad when I am in your presence. And, thank you for your endless love of me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
