A friend and I were meeting one day. That meeting inspired this post.
My friend’s daughter was visiting from college. They were having lunch. During the meal she made this request.
“Dad, one day I want you to apologize to me.”
He was stunned. His mind started racing. Growing up you were strong willed and defiant. You were my difficult daughter. The whole household was flooded with stress because of you. Mom and I had major conflicts over parenting you. You are the one who should be apologizing to me!
Later that day an image of Jesus popped into his head. Jesus was hanging on the cross praying. “Father, forgive them.” My friend’s spirit was deeply moved. While Jesus was being sacrificed he was praying for those around him to be forgiven.
My friend’s mind shifted. Of course I will apologize to my daughter. Why would I want her to carry any pain or disappointment for a lifetime. Yes, I was an imperfect Father and I did make mistakes. I have been so forgiven. I want her to know the forgiveness of Jesus. It would be an honor to help her understand forgiveness through an apology.
Prayer
Father, thank you for this opportunity. You have forgiven me of so much. Thank you that my daughter felt so safe that she could ask me for an apology. The Holy Spirit has touched my heart. Jesus has set the example. And you have shown me such forgiveness. Thank you again. Amen.
