It seems there are two types of men. Those who are hungry for emotional growth, and those who believe they’ve arrived at a place where no more growth is needed.
In my world, growth is amazing, even exciting. Each new day is an opportunity for a new insight. And each new discovery is a gift from God which stirs my soul to delight!
So why are so many men parked and emotionally finished? And why do they believe they’ve arrived at an emotional stopping place?
Could the answer be fear? Consider these fear thoughts and how fear might hinder growth:
- Fear scares and limits all of us.
- Fear is powerful. So powerful, it can stunt the emotional growth of an otherwise healthy, resourceful adult.
- Fear was first experienced in childhood. Back then it was overwhelming. So much so, that even today, seasoned, mature adults act immature when their childhood fear is triggered.
- Fear comes in different flavors:
- Fear of failing and the pain of ridicule.
- Fear of rejection and being excluded.
- Fear of being told you are unworthy.
- Fear of being seen as a fake, poser, or imposter.
What it comes down to
Fear is powerful. It’s so powerful, it limits adults from stretching themselves and taking risks. These individuals settle for a small, safe-emotional life. They stay in that place so long it feels comfortable. It ultimately creates a semi-peaceful sort of contentment. And, in this individual’s world, feeling safe is more much important than growth. Why not be fearless.
Prayer
Father, thank you for grace, mercy, and forgiveness. Thank you that I cannot fail or disappoint you. All my sins are forgiven and removed as far as the east is from the west. Thank you that I can totally rest in your perfect love. Grow me to be like Jesus. And may fear never hinder your plan for my life. Amen.
Bible Connection
Love never brings fear, for fear is always related to punishment. But love’s perfection drives the fear of punishment far from our hearts. Whoever walks constantly afraid of punishment has not reached love’s perfection. – 1 John 4:18 (TPT)
