Alana Newhouse, a journalist and editor, was speaking on a podcast. She strives to understand different cultures, and she offered this summary:
America was built on three main ideas.
First—A group of people, including the Puritans, came to America to pursue and worship God. They wanted to build a society that honored Him.
Second—A group of business-minded individuals came to America seeking opportunity. They wanted to create a place where even the poorest person could work their way toward a better life (capitalism and economic freedom).
Third—Many of the founders believed America held a unique role and responsibility. This idea became known as American exceptionalism.
Today, three competing ideas are gaining influence:
First—There is no God, and He has no place in an educated, scientific society.
Second—Capitalism is viewed by some as driven by greed, while socialism is seen as a better alternative.
Third—There is nothing exceptional about America; it is no different than any other nation.
Closing-
You must decide what you believe—and what you stand for. Influential voices continue to reinterpret the story of our founding.
Prayer-
Father, may this country always bring glory and honor to You. May the churches of America be a beacon and a testimony that we believe You are real. Amen.
Scripture-
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” — Psalm 33:12 (NKJV)
