Do you know how to rest? Merriam-Webster defines rest as freedom from activity or labor, and engaging in peace of mind and spirit. We are discussing rest in contrast to being busy and doing things. More importantly, rest is not distraction, entertainment, or escaping.

Distraction is watching Facebook reels one after another for hours. That is distraction–not rest.
Entertainment is binge watching Netflix movies all weekend. That is entertainment–not rest.
Escaping is having a few beers and playing video games late into the night. That is escaping. Again, not rest.

Rest is solitude and renewal. It’s taking a Sabbath day to rest, renew, and restore. Your soul does not need any more distraction, entertainment, or escaping it needs rest.

Bible Connection

Jesus said, come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Conclusion

Rest comes from a relationship with Jesus. That includes being still like Mary and sitting at his feet. She chose rest, learning, and enjoying His presence.

Prayer

Father, help me learn to rest. I need more rest in my soul. Rest will make me whole. Please help me. Distraction, entertainment, and escaping are easy. Resting with Jesus and being still does not come naturally to me. Please help me. Amen.
