Equipping Christian Men for Richer Relationships

Anger or Depression

What if his anger is a symptom of something deeper?

What if it’s depression?

Depression in men doesn’t always look like sadness, low energy, or withdrawal. It can show up as irritability, frustration, a short temper, restlessness, or emotional shutdown.

Beneath that anger, a man may be disconnected from his sadness. He may deny his fear. He may avoid vulnerability. When he’s overwhelmed, he raises his voice. When he fails, he blames. When he’s hurting, he thrashes.

He may be living in survival mode. His silence is not indifference—it feels safer. His distance is not a lack of care—it’s an attempt to avoid being triggered.

For some men, anger becomes the only way to release pain. In the past, their feelings were ignored, dismissed, or unwelcome. So, today they don’t know how to express the heavy, sad mood they carry.

These man need to increase their emotional awareness. Learn to process emotions. Practice anger management skills. And consider that depression may be at work underneath.

Prayer

Father, help me with my body, stress and anger. Help me with mood management. I give you my life and everything that goes on in this body. I am yours.  Amen

Scripture

Jesus said.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matt. 11:28 (NIV)

Note: Anger does not equal depression. This is an invitation to look deeper—as you explore what is underneath the anger.
