Practicing sadness is a rarely discussed skill. So let’s talk about it.
Sadness is both an emotional state and a necessary step in a healthy process. Sadness shows up when we experience disappointment, when we feel let down, when something we hoped for doesn’t happen, or when life takes a harder turn than we expected.
Sadness includes four essential steps:
Step One — Accept the Change
Acceptance means you stop resisting what has happened. “God, You know what is happening. I will accept this change and this new reality.”
Step Two — Grieve It
Allow the weight of the pain to be felt. Let yourself cry. Cry out to Heaven. “Father, this is heavy, and it hurts. I feel the loss. I feel the disappointment.”
Step Three — Release It
Accept it. Grieve it. Now release the fight against it. “Father, I will not fight against this assignment. I trust that You know what is best.”
Step Four — Return to Rest
Living stuck in distress, anger, or discontentment drains the soul. But a life that returns to deep, peaceful rest is the goal. “Father, I want my life to rest in Your presence. Please teach me deep, abiding rest.”
Prayer:
Father, give me wisdom. Teach me how to experience sadness in a healthy, God-honoring way. Help me process my emotions. Lead me into deep, abiding rest. Amen.
Scripture
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4 (NIV)
