Equipping Christian Men for Richer Relationships

Emotional Pain Responses

Four Ways Men Respond to Emotional Pain

We all carry emotional wounds. Growing up men develop ways of coping with that hurt. How did you develop? Which one describes you?

Half Present Man-

As boys, we all wanted relief from disappointment and pain. So we learned to escape. Using imagination and fantasy, we created an escape world in our minds—a place where we felt valued, admired, and enjoyed. These men live in two worlds.

Angry Man-

Angry men live with deep inner torment. They have little peace or rest. Anger becomes their shield. It keeps people at a distance. People learn to leave angry men alone. On the outside they may look and sound strong, but inside they remain stunted and emotionally underdeveloped.

Numb Man-

These men have shut down emotionally. They see emotions as painful, confusing, and uncontrollable. So they retreat into logic. Logic becomes their strong place, and they overuse it in every conversation.

Present and Engaged Man-

These men step into the battle of life. They understand that emotional pain is part of living. Growth requires learning how to face and process intense emotions. These men take ownership of their inner life and commit themselves to emotional growth.

Close:

We will all experience emotional pain. Choosing to learn from it, grow through it, and face it honestly means you are fully engaged in the fight of life.

Prayer:

Father, teach me how to walk wisely through pain. Help me become present and engaged. Grow me from a scared, little boy into a wise, godly man. Amen.

Scripture:

“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.”  1 Cor. 13:11 (NIV)
